Can students spell?

University students often get a bad rap in the press – especially when it comes to spelling and grammar! So we decided to run a mass test – just for a bit of fun.

Based on multiple choice selections nearly all students knew the difference between “their”, “there” and “they’re” (97%), “accept” and “except” (96%), “loose” and “lose” (97%), “application” and “aplication” (97%).

But here are the shockers. 37% of students thought “necessary” was spelt “neccessary” and over two thirds of students (71%) thought that “stationary” was for writing on, not “stationery” – oh dear, only 29% got it right.
