Student Vote and Party Preference April 2015 - UPDATE
- Labour remain the first choice party for students
- The Green Party recovers slightly since last wave, but remains in 3rd place
- 75% of students are likely to vote in the general election (rising from 69% at the start of April), bucking the youth trend
With the 2015 general election imminent, Labour remains the first choice party for students, with just over a third pledging their vote to them. However, share of party preference for the Conservatives has been creeping up since the end of last year, suggesting a closer than anticipated contest.
In our last wave of student polling (20th April 2015) we reported a tumble in the polls for the Green Party, with the Conservatives leapfrogging them back into second place. Our most recent wave shows a bounce back for the Green Party, but they are still 5 points behind the Conservative Party. Our last round of polling came just after a series of poor media performances by the Green leader, Natalie Bennett, which likely explains the dramatic fall. Results in this latest wave suggest that some lost ground has been recovered.
The Liberal Democrats, who were the clear choice for students at the last election, remain in 4th place with just 7% of the vote. Immediately prior to the 2010 general election, the Liberal Democrats were polling at 50% amongst students. This further highlights their collapse in popularity since entering the coalition. The SNP and UKIP are 5th and 6th choice respectively amongst students.
About this research
Only full-time undergraduates at publicly funded UK and Higher Education institutions are included in each wave. The respondents questioned in the fieldwork for each wave are members of The Student Panel. Respondents have verified their academic email address (ending ‘ac.uk’). Nested quotas are used to achieve a sample that was representative of the UK full time undergraduate population by gender, course year (1, 2, 3+) and university type (Russell group, pre 1992 universities, post 1992 universities and specialist institutions). Targets for the quotas and weights are acquired using population data supplied by the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA). Fieldwork was conducted between 29th April – 1st May 2015. To date YouthSight has completed 101 waves of fieldwork on the Student Vote since July 2004. The sample size for each student omnibus survey is between 1,000-1,100 respondents.
