Ofsted, the organisation responsible for inspecting and regulating further education and skills providers in England, launched its revised Common Inspection Framework in September 2012 following extensive consultation with key stakeholder groups. A key group consulted were current learners.

Ofsted asked YouthSight to conduct two online surveys, one in 2011 and one in 2012. These surveys gave voice to a total of 930 learners at a range of learning/training providers including Further Education colleges, independent specialist colleges, independent training providers and workplaces. Respondents were given detailed descriptions of the proposed changes and had abundant chances to voice their opinions.

The results from these two pieces of research provided Ofsted with valuable insight into the opinions of Further Education learners and helped shape the revised Common Inspection Framework. Emma Woodwark, Senior Project Manager at YouthSight, said: “We’re delighted to have been able to help Ofsted with such an important consultation. Learners are a sample that many clients struggle to reach, and YouthSight’s Youth Panel is an easy way to access this target group”.
