Young people are using social media to challenge expectations and perceptions of beauty standards, with 64% saying that they want to use various platforms to engage with brands and content around it. Instagram is an incredibly key player in this - 35% of young people prefer the platform when it comes to discussing all things beauty online, a 10% increase since 2017 (SYN, W3A.2, Apr 19).

This interest in engaging with beauty increases to 85% among young women, though is still of interest and important to young men, with 43% interested. The ability to engage with beauty is of particular important with ethnic minorities, with 72% young BAME using social media to explore beauty, perhaps because - along with other minority interest groups - they can find better representation and community in content on social media.
